The 15th Summer School of the Constitutional Court of Georgia successfully concluded on August 3, 2023. Over the course of nine days, twenty-six top law students from various Georgian universities delved into the intricacies of constitutional review models in the U.S. and Europe, explored the right to equality and non-discrimination standards in the U.S., Europe, and Georgia, and examined the freedom of information in a constitutional democracy, making comparisons between the U.S., Europe, and Georgia. The Constitutional Court Summer School was made possible through the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program and the Council of Europe Office in Georgia.
Manana Kobakhidze, Deputy Chair of the Constitutional Court; Giorgi Chkheidze, USAID Rule of Law Program Chief of Party; and Giorgi Giorgadze and Levan Meskhoradze, Senior Project Officers at the Council of Europe's Office in Georgia addressed the students with welcome remarks.
The participating students were privileged to interact and learn from two guest professors invited by the USAID Rule of Law Program from Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law. Professor Jonathan Manes provided a very interesting presentation on the American experience concerning the right to equality and the prohibition of discrimination. Professor Christine Evans offered insights into her country's system of constitutional control.
The students also benefited from the knowledge and expertise of other local and international experts, such as Teimuraz Tughushi, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Georgia; Bill Bowring, Professor of Law at Birkbeck College, University of London (UK); Maartje De Visser, Associate Professor of Law at Singapore Management University; Irakli Ksovreli, Head of the Legal Provision and Research Department of the Constitutional Court of Georgia; and Levan Maisuradze, Expert in Constitutional Law and Head of the Legal Assurance Group of the Legal Department of the Communications Commission of Georgia.
As the Summer School came to an end, participants were honored with certificates for their successful completion of the program. Additionally, five outstanding graduates of the Summer School – Tekla Benashvili, Tamaz Kirtava, Anano Nachkebia, and Nino Chedia – were awarded a paid internship opportunity and employment at the prestigious Constitutional Court of Georgia, paving the way for their promising legal careers.
