On December 25, 2024, fourteen student-paralegals from the Samtskhe-Javakheti region participated in a training session focused on the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) organized by the Legal Aid Service (LAS) and the USAID Rule of Law Program.
Led by human rights expert Nino Elbakidze, the training explored key topics such as defining and determining disability status, the legal frameworks at both national and international levels, and mechanisms for safeguarding these rights. The discussions addressed critical areas like accessibility, independent living, education, access to justice, and labor rights, using simulated case studies to illustrate these issues.
Ms. Elbakidze also introduced the participants to Georgia’s 2015 legal capacity reform, which enables individuals with disabilities to make their own decisions while receiving support when necessary, promoting autonomy and self-determination. She emphasized the importance of aligning with the standards set by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Additionally, the trainer guided the group through an analysis of local discrimination cases, shedding light on the challenges PWDs face in defending their rights and achieving a dignified life. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, the students examined real-life scenarios, leading to engaging conversations and collaborative presentations that demonstrated their understanding of the concepts shared by the expert.
