On November 16, 2022, with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, a Practical Skills Center was established at New Vision University. The aim of the Center is to promote the teaching and development of practical skills at law schools.
After the opening ceremony, a roundtable discussion involving practicing lawyers, representatives of law schools and clinics, as well as the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, was held. The roundtable participants discussed the importance of teaching practical skills as a separate or special course, the importance of incorporating ethical regulations into practical skills courses, and the importance of teaching practical skills as an intensive course in law clinics. The invited guests also talked about the challenges in this direction, both from the perspective of the university and the employer. At the end of the meeting, recommendations were developed and further steps of cooperation were set.
“The lack of practical skills is one of the main challenges for the successful professional practice of young lawyers in Georgia. Therefore, we see the role of the Center as the platform for the exchange of experience and developing of joint programs and activities with other universities to further support those entering the legal profession.”- said the Chairman of the Academic Council of the University, David Kereselidze in his welcome notes.
USAID Rule of Law Program Deputy Chief of Party Neil Weinstein stated: “One of ways to build the independence and effectiveness of justice sector institutions is to improve the quality of Georgia’s lawyers. This is why improving the practical skills-related programs at law schools is one of the USAID Rule of Law Program’s priorities.”
