On November 30, 2023, the Georgian Trade Union Confederation (GTUC) under the USAID Rule of Law Program-funded strategic litigation project, “Litigating, Advocating and Raising Awareness of Labor Rights to Ensure Equality in Employment,” held a webinar on women’s labor rights and gender equality in Georgia.
Raisa Liparteliani, GTUC Vice President, and Nato Natenadze, First Deputy of the Chief Labor Inspector, spoke about the steps taken and implemented in the direction of women's labor rights and gender equality. Nino Razmadze, Head of GTUC’s PR Department, moderated the discussion that followed.
The discussion touched upon informal employment, including domestic workers, existing challenges in the labor market, inequality women face even before employment during the selection stage, and wage inequality. Ms. Natenadze also shared information about the Labor Inspection Office and its mandate.
The speakers answered such questions from the audience as: How can the informal women workers protect their rights? Can the identity of a person applying to either the Public Defender of Georgia or the Labor Inspection regarding a complaint of labor discrimination remain anonymous? What are labor rules that apply to maternity leave? And what is the Labor Inspectorate’s mandate concerning migrant women’s rights?
The webinar was organized under the framework of the 16-day global campaign against gender-based violence, which takes place every year from November 25 to December 10.
