On January 16, 2024, at a release event at SEU University, Georgian human rights experts Anna Phirtskhalashvili and Besik Loladze announced the release of their new groundbreaking book titled: “Fundamental Rights (Commentary)”. USAID’s Rule of Law Program sponsored the drafting of the book and its release event.
The book contains two major sections. The first section covers the development of human rights philosophy and doctrine both in Georgia and the West.
The second section deals with the current state of human rights protection provided by the Georgian Constitution, the Constitutional Court of Georgia and international courts such as, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the European Court of Human Rights. The book will serve as a valuable resource not only for students, but for practicing legal professionals.
Approximately 100 people attended the release event, including professors, students, NGO representatives, lawyers, and judges. During the event, the authors explained the book's creation process and gave an overview of its content. SEU Law School Dean, Tea Jugheli, praised the authors’ effort in her opening remarks. Deputy Minister of Justice Tornike Cheishvili in his remarks, commended the authors' work, stressing the role of education and universities in shaping democratic legal systems in the country. Constitutional Court Judge Giorgi Kverenchkhiladze expressed gratitude for the book’s creation, pointing out that it was the first comprehensive and exhaustive resource on human rights in the Georgian language.
The fact that during the event a long line of people formed to obtain a copy of the book, provided evidence that there exists a high demand for Georgian language educational resources.
