On October 23 and 24, 2023, the New Vision University's Legal Ethics Chair, with support from the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized public lectures at Zugdidi Shota Meskhia State Teaching University (ZSU) and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (BSU). These lectures were led by Ana Loria, Legal Ethics co-chair at New Vision University, and a member of the Georgian Bar Association’s Ethics Commission.
The lecture at ZSU focused on "The Lawyer’s role in Society, the Legal Profession, and Justice." During this lecture, the speaker discussed varying perspectives on a lawyer's role in the United States and Europe. Additionally, distinctions between the common law and continental legal systems were discussed.
During the lecture at BSU, Ms. Loria spoke on "The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Field of Justice." She spoke about ethical and practical considerations associated with the implementation of AI in the legal profession. Key topics covered during the lecture included: the definition and applications of AI, how lawyers use AI for legal research, reasoning, ensuring proportionate sanctions, and preventing recidivism. The lecture also emphasized the sources lawyers rely on for legal research and their professional obligations when employing AI, with a specific focus on preventing the dissemination of false or misleading information.
During these lectures, sixty students actively engaged with Ms. Loria, seeking answers to practical dilemmas. Students asked questions about the frequency of lawyers' use of AI and their professional obligations, the use of ChatGPT in the local legal system, and whether judges in Georgia incorporate AI into their work.
Students also inquired about a lawyer's course of action when they are aware that a client is providing false information in court, whether a lawyer can present evidence they know to be untrue, and the boundaries of honesty when clients themselves are being untruthful.
In total, six public lectures were conducted by the New Vision University representatives in regional universities as part of the USAID Rule of Law Program supported project's objectives.
