The New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair, with support from the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized a public lecture on 'Freedom of Expression in Social Media and Deontological Ethics' at Gori State University.
The lecture was well-attended, with 20 participants, including 17 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Law, as well as law professors. Ana Loria, co-chair of New Vision University's Legal Ethics Program and a member of the Ethics Commission at the Georgian Bar Association and Georgian Association of Arbitrators, led the lecture.
During the event, Professor Loria addressed various aspects of a lawyer's freedom of expression, examining relevant regulations and both local and international (including European Court of Human Rights) practices. Emphasis was placed on the recent decisions (from 2022-2023) of the Ethics Commission of the Georgian Bar Association and the Supreme Court of Georgia regarding lawyers' freedom of expression on social media.
Students actively participated in the lecture, posing questions about situations in which lawyers are obliged to adhere to ethical obligations and the extent to which ethical permissibility applies to interns in terms of freedom of expression.
This public lecture marked the fourth consecutive event within the scope of the current grant to New Vision University. Additionally, the New Vision University Legal Ethics Chair will hold public lectures at universities in Zugdidi and Batumi.
