The Human Rights Film Club at Ilia State University School of Law, with support from the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized a film screening and discussion titled "12 Lessons" with Giorgi Mrevlishvili, the director of the movie, Diana Janashia, the Family and Community Services Coordinator at Mac Georgia, and Jeremy Gaskill, the Chief Executive Officer at Mac Georgia.
"12 Lessons" tells the story of Valery Kotrikadze, a resident of Guria, who makes efforts to integrate his autistic grandson into society. The movie effectively portrays the challenges faced by individuals on the autistic spectrum at different stages of life and the assistance provided by Mac Georgia.
The post-screening discussion was moderated by Ayhan Hasanli, a student at Ilia State University School of Law. The speakers, together with the audience, engaged in a discussion about the film's content, available resources, and programs for children on the autism spectrum.
Questions were raised regarding the lack of statistics regarding autism in Georgia, the shortage of professionals in this field, and potential solutions to address this reality. Throughout the discussion, civic education teachers and parents of children on the autism spectrum shared their experiences and ideas.
