On December 17, 2023, the Kutaisi Branch of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA), with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized a mock trial at Akaki Tsereteli State University focusing on the civil rights of children. 16 high school students worked on the case, which involved the protection of a child's interests in a case of divorce, particularly when the father sought visiting hours.
The mock trial was part of GYLA's Sunday School, a program aimed at informing and engaging students on various topics, such as fair trial standards, civil rights for children, freedom of expression, and religious rights.
Darine Saldadze, Chairperson of GYLA Kutaisi branch, emphasized that cases like these are common in their practice, underscoring that the best interest of the child always takes precedence, especially for vulnerable groups. In this instance, the discussion specifically delved into the rights of children with disabilities, addressing their needs and rights to a healthy developmental environment.
Ana Shalamberdze, USAID Rule of Law Program’s Regional Rule of Law Hub Attorney in Kutaisi, commended the students’ interest in participating in the protection of human rights. Ms. Shalamberdze expressed pride in the paralegal students who mentored the children, preparing them for the mock trial, viewing it as a testament to the program's success in disseminating information on human rights issues.
The jury, comprised of Kutaisi-based lawyers, recognized individuals in various categories, including the best applicant, respondent, speaker, most astute thinker, and outstanding lawyer. The Program presented them with awards, including 14 pieces of literature by both Georgian and foreign authors.
