The USAID Rule of Law Program supports the Georgian law schools to develop and implement “Street Law” programs. Street Law programs are an educational initiative where law students provide legal education to individuals in the community who may not have access to it. The programs aim to promote social justice by teaching people about their legal rights and responsibilities in everyday life. The programs also help law students to develop key skills for lawyering, including the communication of legal information to a non-lawyer and presentation skills.
On February 21-23, 2023, the USAID Rule of Law Program gathered the representatives of six law schools [Kutaisi, Batumi, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Zugdidi, Telavi, and Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani University] to discuss the format, teaching methodologies, and efficient delivery of the Street Law courses.
The workshop was led by Street Law, Inc. experts Amy Wallace and Richard Grimes. Individual sessions were held and feedback was provided by the experts on the specifics of the Street Law courses at each university.
Most of the attending law schools plan to launch a pilot program for the Street Law course during the Spring 2023 semester. Based on the experience gained and lessons learned, they will finalize their course syllabus and integrate it into the curriculum from the 2023-2024 academic year.
