On December 5, 2023, as part of Human Rights Week, the Human Rights Chair at Ilia State University (IliaUni) School of Law, with support from the USAID Rule of Law Program, held three informational meetings on human rights at Tbilisi N21 Public School.
IliaUni magistrate students used the event to introduce 60 school students to human rights topics and to explain the legal mechanisms used to protect human rights in Georgia
During the first discussion, Ayhan Hasanli spoke to a group of 11th graders about the right of a child to a fair trial, prompting discussion about whether children can approach the court without a representative.
Ilia Kuchava spoke to 10th graders about children's labor rights and the protective mechanisms that currently exist, while Nutsa Osiashvili explained how the Child Protection Department of the Public Defender's Institute works and how minors can seek assistance from the Ombudsman. Some of the 10th graders inquired about legal age limits for child labor and working hours.
When Tamar Pachulia spoke about the need to protect personal data and how to go about doing so, some of the students asked about the school's role in safeguarding that type of data.
