On October 10, the Mediators Association of Georgia (MAG), with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized a meeting to introduce new members of the Georgian Bar Association (GBA) to the concept of mediation, and to raise their awareness of the work of MAG.
The event commenced with welcome remarks from Irakli Kandashvili, MAG Chairman, and Ekaterine Lortkipanidze, ADR Specialist at the USAID Rule of Law Program. During his speech, Mr. Kandashvili emphasized the importance of lawyers having a thorough understanding of mediation, as they play a crucial role as the primary channel for referring cases to mediation. Clients place trust in their lawyers' advice, making the way they communicate information about mediation vital in shaping clients' perception of this dispute resolution method.
Twenty-eight newcomer lawyers from the GBA representing Tbilisi, Rustavi and Zestaponi actively participated in the event. They had the opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns and experiences concerning mediation. The discussions revolved around the advantages of mediation, the distinctions between court-annexed and private mediation, the importance of informing clients in advance about this means of dispute resolution as well as including fees for the involvement in mediation process in contracts with them.
Newcomer lawyers who attended the meeting enhanced their ability to provide comprehensive advice to their clients by incorporating mediation as a viable option. This can lead to better client representation and more informed decision-making.
Meetings with lawyers that are regularly organized by MAG through the USAID Rule of Law Program support, will have a positive impact on the development of mediation in the country, promoting a greater understanding and utilization of this method of dispute resolution.
