On November 15, 2023, the Mediators Association of Georgia (MAG), with the support of the USAID Rule of Law Program, organized a meeting to introduce new members of the Georgian Bar Association (GBA) to the concept of mediation, and to raise their awareness of the work of MAG.
The event commenced with welcome remarks from Irakli Kandashvili, MAG Chairman, and Irakli Gelovani, ADR Advisor at the USAID Rule of Law Program.
Mr. Kandashvili emphasized the importance of lawyers having a thorough understanding of mediation, as they play a crucial role as the primary channel for referring cases to mediation. Clients place trust in their lawyers' advice, making the way they communicate information about mediation vital in shaping clients' perceptions of this dispute resolution method.
Eighteen new members of GBA representing Tbilisi and Rustavi participated in the event. They asked questions and shared their concerns and experiences with mediation. The discussions revolved around the advantages of mediation, the distinctions between court-annexed and private mediation, the importance of informing clients in advance about this means of dispute resolution, as well as the need to include fees for the mediation process in employment contract. The new bar members who attended the meeting learned that they could enhance their ability to provide comprehensive advice to their clients by incorporating mediation as a viable dispute resolution option.
Meetings with lawyers that are regularly organized by MAG, with USAID Rule of Law Program support, is having a positive impact on the development of mediation in the country, and is promoting a greater understanding and utilization of this method of dispute resolution.
