Raising awareness of justice issues and promoting citizen engagement is one of the main priorities of the USAID Rule of Law Program.
On June 27, 2023, Green Sector, a Batumi-based CSO supported by the Rule of Law Program, held a seminar on promoting citizen engagement for 21 representatives of justice sector institutions and organizations working on human rights at Batumi State University. The participants included representatives of Batumi City Court, Constitutional Court, Legal Aid Service, Batumi State University, and local civil society organizations.
Green Sector discussed how courts and other justice institutions can receive visitors, manage student groups, and develop excursion programs to promote citizen engagement.
Ilia Guchmanidze, Director of Green Sector, introduced its "Justice Navigator" project, which is aimed at promoting community engagement with courts and other justice institutions. Professor Levan Jakeli, Dean of the Department of Law and Social Sciences at Batumi State University, and Tsiala Katamidze, the Green Sector program manager, presented an outline of a thematic guide for organizing educational visits to justice institutions.
Lado Abkhazava, a civic education expert, emphasized the role and importance of educational tours. The participants also discussed the potential and ability of justice institutions to cooperate with the educational sector.
The meeting was held within the framework of Green Sector’s "Justice Navigator" project, which is supported by the USAID Rule of Law Program. The project raises the awareness of young people and promotes partnerships between justice institutions and the educational sector through student informational tours.
