Rights Georgia, with the support from the USAID Rule of Law Program, held four information meetings on gender equality and violence against women in different regions of Georgia.
The Meetings took place on November 25 in Chiatura with high school students, on November 28 in Ambrolauri with students and teachers of Vocational College Erkvani, on December 6 in Lagodekhi with the local community, and on December 8 in Telavi with students and academic staff of Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University. A total of 52 people attended the meetings.
During the meetings, Rights Georgia lawyers stressed the importance of gender equality and discussed various forms of violence against women. They also presented legal mechanisms available to protect and assist victims of violence. Issues of hate speech, sexual harassment, early marriage, legal grounds for sentencing and the imposition of administrative penalties, gender stereotypes, and bullying in schools were also discussed.
The participants shared their views on the causes of domestic violence and the role of both society and the state in addressing the issue, as well as highlighted the significance of empowering women both economically and socially.
The meetings were part of the 16-day global campaign against gender-based violence, which takes place every year from November 25 to December 10.
