On January 18, 2024, the Socrates Club at Ilia State University School of Law with USAID Rule of Law Program support, organized an event at the Ligamus Book House to discuss a Supreme Court of Georgia decision regarding a 2023 domestic violence case.
Speakers included Madonna Maisuradze, a Judge from Rustavi District Court, and Shorena Loladze, the Director of the Legal Aid program for the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association.
The discussion focused on a case where there were repeated acts of violence committed in the presence of minors, leading to charges under Article 126 Prima of the Criminal Code of Georgia. Moderators used the case to explore the complexities of domestic violence jurisprudence. Participants discussed legal precedents set by the Supreme Court and proposed strategies aimed at preventing instances of domestic violence.
Judge Maisuradze shared her insight into court practices in such cases, underscoring the necessity of increasing awareness within educational institutions. Shorena Loladze provided an overview of non-governmental organizations' roles in handling domestic violence instances. The audience raised inquiries regarding investigative bodies' competencies, the judiciary's role, and the significance of public engagement in addressing such cases.
