USAID Rule of Law Program Hosts Engaging Public Talk in Akhaltsikhe on Freedom of Speech and Societal Progress

Building on the success of previous events in Batumi and Kutaisi, the USAID Rule of Law Program hosted the first public talk in Akhaltsikhe on July 30, 2024.

The event featured prominent writer and journalist David Gorgiladze, known for his popular YouTube show "Unbearable Lightness of Gorgiladze," and the lawyer Zviad Kordzadze.

The discussion focused on the vital importance of freedom of speech and the right to express opinions. Gorgiladze highlighted the crucial role of storytelling in societal progress, cautioning that limiting self-expression could impede advancement. He emphasized the need to protect freedom of expression, particularly during times of uncertainty.

Kordzadze supported Gorgiladze’s views, asserting that freedom of speech is essential for a thriving society. However, he also noted that freedom of speech has limits and should not infringe on others' rights and reputations. He discussed the importance of unity in addressing common issues and tackling misinformation, urging the public to verify the information they receive. Kordzadze underscored the need to balance protecting freedom of speech with preventing harm to others.

The event attracted over 45 participants, including law students, business professionals, psychologists, civil activists, lawyers, and local media representatives. It provided a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing perspectives, and exploring solutions to common challenges through open discussion. Attendees also reflected on the roles various societal groups can play in driving meaningful change.
