On April 12-15, 2023, the Louis M. Brown Forest S. Mosten International Client Consultation Competition (ICCC 2023) was held in Maastricht, Netherlands. Twenty-one countries, including Georgia, participated in the competition. The topic of this year's contest was environmental law.
With USAID Rule of Law Program support, Georgia was represented by Elene Kakulia and Teimuraz Darbaidze from Tbilisi State University, the winners of the national competition, and their coach and national representative, Ana Gorduladze. The other participating countries were Canada, Croatia, England, Finland, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Turkey, Ukraine, United States, Uzbekistan, and Wales.
On April 12, the Georgian team attended a seminar on the Challenges for Environmental Lawyers When We Have to Feed the World. Professor of Environmental Law Marjan Peeters of Maastricht University and attorney Ludo Hameleers spoke on the issue, and the discussion after the presentation was moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Agustin Parise from Maastricht University's faculty of law.
The participants were later greeted by the Dean of the law faculty, Dr. J Smits, and the Executive Chair of the Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition, Mr. Forrest Mosten.
The preliminary rounds were held on April 13-14, where the Georgian team competed against India, Ukraine, Germany, and Netherlands. On April 15, after close and fierce semi-final and final rounds, Ireland took the first place and got their names embedded on the winners' shield.
Various judges assessed the teams at the competition, and the Georgian team received high praise. Judge Emilio Filomeno, representing the Canadian team and winner of the ICCC 2022, pointed out that the teamwork, establishment of relationships between the client and attorneys, the logical explanation of the process, and the legal advice provided by the Georgian team were "phenomenal."
