The USAID Rule of Law Program has formed a dynamic partnership with the Legal Aid Service (LAS) to promote public awareness and improve access to justice. The Program and LAS signed a Memorandum of Partnership to facilitate collaboration on activities aimed at informing the general public about their legal rights and available avenues for seeking justice.
The Memorandum also outlines the implementation of a paid internship program for two student-paralegals, Nino Gogitidze and Nino Gugesashvili. These interns will have the opportunity to engage in trial and hearing preparation, attend legal consultations, and observe court proceedings at Batumi City and Khelvachauri District Courts. The internship will provide them with valuable practical experience in the field of law, contributing to their professional development and equipping them with the necessary skills to make a positive impact in the legal sphere.
Both Ms. Gogitidze and Ms. Gugesashvili have actively participated in the USAID Rule of Law Program-supported 'Make Justice Available for All' campaign run by LAS since September 2022, assisting LAS lawyers and consultants to host informational sessions for citizens of Adjara. Before this internship, they received training on various topics including women's rights, human trafficking, the best interests of a child, rights of persons with disabilities, basic human rights, and affective and assertive communication skills, and participated in three mock trials.
Reflecting on the significance of the practical experience they gained through the ‘Make Justice Availaable for All’ campaign, Ms. Gogitidze said, "As valuable as training can be, it's important to recognize that there will always be future opportunities for theoretical education. What we truly need are more chances to apply our knowledge, engage with people, and participate in meaningful activities that enhance our understanding of our profession. The awareness-raising campaign 'Make Justice Available for All' and this internship provide a very important opportunity for me to put my theoretical knowledge into practice and share it with the community."
Ms. Gugesashvili shares the same perspective and believes that translating theoretical knowledge into practice is crucial for becoming a successful lawyer. "I consider the internship at the LAS Batumi Bureau a dream opportunity for every law student to further develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required for a career as a practicing lawyer."
To date, 30 student-paralegals have received training as part of the ‘Make Justice Available for All’ activity, and 21 mobile visits have been conducted in highland villages of Adjara. Through these efforts, more than 500 young people, women, and community members gained awareness of their rights and how to enforce them.
