Youth Visiting Courts in Adjara

The USAID Rule of Law Program is dedicated to promoting court-community engagement to increase public awareness about the judiciary. With the Program support, the Adjara-based NGO Green Sector organized numerous educational visits to local courts.

On October 6, 2023, a group of 18 students from public schools in Keda municipality, including Tsnoriasi, Oktomberi, Merisi, and Makhuntseti, had the opportunity to visit the Khelvachauri District Court. The students were warmly received by the Chairman, Gocha Putkaradze, who provided insights into the functioning of the justice system in the country. He also discussed the daily operations of the court and allowed the students to observe an ongoing hearing, offering them a firsthand experience of court proceedings.

On October 12, 2023, 69 students from schools in Batumi and Shuakhevi municipalities visited the Constitutional Court of Georgia. Giorgi Lomtadze, Head of the Court Secretariat, explained the Constitutional Court's vital role in the country's legal system, outlining its authority and structure. The students gained valuable knowledge about the procedures for filing appeals with the court and the fundamental principles of constitutional proceedings.

“It was very interesting to visit the Constitutional Court. We learned about the Court in school, now we were able to see how it works in practice. Visits like these help us to become informed citizens.” – noted Lizi Makaridze, a ninth-grade student from the Batumi.

In addition to the court tours, the students visited Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University's legal clinic, court simulation hall, forensics cabinet laboratory, and the Law Film Club. During these visits, Omar Partenadze, the Head of the Law Department, Salome Karalidze, the Deputy Dean of the same department, and Nargiz Tshekladze, the coordinator of the legal clinic, engaged with the students, emphasizing the significance and role of the legal profession.

These educational visits were organized as part of the Green Sector project, which seeks to strengthen community engagement with justice sector organizations by facilitating study tours for school students.
